PT Bukit Asam

As part of the privatization process leading to an IPO for PT Bukit Asam in Indonesia MW was retained to conduct an Environmental Review of the company. The review included analysis of the environmental performance and current liabilities of the producing coal mines in Tanjung Enim and Ombilin. The site activity was conducted during the period October 21 to October 31 1996 culminating with a presentation to the Directors in Jakarta on November1.

The objective of the Environmental Review was to conduct a Preliminary Environmental Audit of the operations so that the environmental issues affecting the operation can be categorized and the potential impacts quantified. The assignment included the determination of the environmental liability, the liability and the methods utilized to determine the amount was presented in a document titled PTBA Preliminary Environmental Liability Review.

In addition to the two mining areas, MW completed an environmental review of the three coal ports; Kertapati, Tarahan and Teluk Bayur.

Subsequent to the review MW managed the development and implementation of the Environmental Action Plan to upgrade the environmental compliance of the company. This Plan included detailed hydrologic designs, upgraded mine planning, revegetation procedures hazardous material handling and waste disposal plus training of operating personnel.

MW was retained by Bukit Asam to provide ongoing technical assistance for the implementation of the required Environmental Action Plan. This assistance focused on the design of the excess spoil disposal areas, the design and construction of sediment control structures and the timely design and construction of all drainage ditches. A major effort was made to integrate accepted environmental practice at the mine planning stage.
